Olivia Horton Is the 2020 Recipient of Taylor & Ring’s Annual Victim Advocate Scholarship

Olivia Horton Is the 2020 Recipient of Taylor & Ring’s Annual Victim Advocate ScholarshipAfter a difficult and challenging year, Taylor & Ring is excited to announce the very deserving winner of the 2020 Taylor & Ring Annual Victim Advocate Scholarship, Olivia Horton! Only in her first year of law school, Olivia has already had a profound effect on her community by taking significant and continuous action to raise awareness of and to prevent gender discrimination and violence.

After excelling in her Gender Studies coursework at Georgetown University, Olivia conceived, designed, and launched a student-led initiative focused on addressing sexual violence on campus. She went on to co-teach a first-of-its-kind student-led undergraduate course focused on preventing – and ensuring justice for those who experienced – sexual harm on campus. Prior to that, Olivia interned for the Houston Area Women’s Center, where she worked with children experiencing sexual abuse in their homes. As an undergraduate, Olivia was also a leader in the Georgetown Survivors and Allies organization and the Students Taking Action Against Interpersonal Violence (STAIV) organization on campus.

During her undergraduate studies Olivia also interned for the Office of Civil Rights in the Department of Education, where she learned about the significant Title IX policy changes being made at that time. She became so well-versed in Title IX issues that she was invited to present a lecture on the topic to Georgetown’s upper division Advanced Gender Studies course. Olivia then worked with one of her professors to create, fund, and launch the Title IX for a New Generation initiative, which is designed to make long-lasting changes on campus and to educate students on how to make the college community a safer and more respectful place for everyone. Olivia also put this knowledge to practice when she interned for the Department of Justice’s Educational Opportunities Section, where she took an active role in assisting on Title IX matters.

Congratulations, Olivia; all of us here at Taylor & Ring are thankful for your continued advocacy on behalf of victims and wish you the best in your legal career!
