Robert Clayton Speaks to Contra Costa Times on Recent Balcony Collapse Incident

On June 16, a Berkeley apartment balcony collapsed as a result of dry rotting, which killed six people and severely injured seven. Attorney Robert Clayton was quoted In the Contra Costa Times about this tragic event. Based upon his extensive experience representing people injured by structural collapses, Mr. Clayton was quoted as saying “Balconies normally don’t collapse on their own…[but rather] it’s usually the result of neglect.”

In recent years, balcony collapses have been reported across the country, many attributed to poor maintenance, dry rot or termite damage. City officials have yet to disclose the official cause as to why the balcony collapsed.

In a similar incidence, Mr. Clayton is representing five students who were injured when a balcony collapsed in Isla Vista near the UC Santa Barbara campus in 2013. One of Mr. Clayton’s clients suffered multiple injuries, including a fractured pelvis and bruising over the entire left side of her body. He is suing the building managers and owners for failure to properly take care of the building.
