A sometimes overlooked problem: student-committed sexual abuse

Do not wait to seek legal help.

That is the firm admonition we stress for parents and other caregivers in Southern California or elsewhere across the state who reasonably know or suspect that a child under their charge is being sexually abused by one or more students at school.

We note on our website at the Los Angeles personal injury law firm of Taylor & Ring — a law practice deeply devoted to strong legal advocacy on behalf of sex abuse victims — that school-related sexual abuse most often seems to involve figures like teachers, coaches, adult mentors and administrators. And, indeed, media stories across the country sadly and all too frequently relate episodes of sexual misconduct perpetrated by school authority figures upon students.

It is also a tragic reality, though, many vulnerable students in California and nationally are sexually abused by their peers.

It is a flat imperative that such wrongs be immediately reported, with requisite action taken to stop them, send a deterrent message to other similarly inclined individuals and seek a meaningful recovery for victims that includes compensation they need that can be appropriately applied to healing and related matters.

In representing clients who have suffered from the sexually related criminal conduct of others, we diligently pursue all those aims, with empathy, compassion and conviction.

And, in doing so, we seek to identify and hold legally responsible all the parties who have a duty to act reasonably in the school environment and to behave in a manner that promotes safety for all students.

Accountability can extend broadly in school-related sex abuse cases. Student perpetrators are of course responsible for their actions. In many instances, too, the above-cited authority figures can be found liable for dereliction in oversight or for other actions or omissions that promote an unsafe learning environment.

We welcome contacts from readers having any questions or concerns regarding any aspect of sexual abuse relevant to a school setting. We care, and always take great pride in the role we take as advocates for individuals and families that need our help.
