‘Coughing fit’ blamed for fatal big rig accident in Pacoima

Multi-vehicle auto accidents involving large commercial vehicles require detailed investigations to determine exactly what happened. Truck drivers and trucking companies are subject to regulations that do not apply to passenger vehicles, and unfortunately violations of trucking industry regulations are to blame for many crashes.

Police are looking into the cause of a recent series of collisions involving a big rig on the 210 Freeway in Pacoima. The accident took the life of one man and seriously injured four other people. A California Highway Patrol officer has indicated that distracted or impaired driving is being investigated as a possible cause of the accident.

The CHP has said that the truck driver lost control of his rig, which left the freeway and traveled down an embankment before plowing into a car and an SUV. The big rig then hit a pickup truck, which was pushed into a dump truck. The driver of the pickup truck was killed, and four others, including a passenger in the pickup, were injured.

Police have said that the driver of the big rig apparently had a coughing fit, which caused him to lose control of his vehicle.

When someone else’s negligent or reckless actions cause a person’s death, the family of the deceased has the right to bring a wrongful death lawsuit against the party responsible for the accident. If the negligent party is the operator of a large commercial vehicle, then the investigation of the crash must be done very carefully and in a timely manner. Truck accident evidence is time-sensitive, and to secure the justice they deserve, the family members of the deceased should speak with a wrongful death attorney with experience in investigating trucking accidents.
