Hundreds Sue USC over Sexual Abuse by George Tyndall
The University of Southern California is currently facing an increasing number of lawsuits over allegations that Dr. George Tyndall, a former campus gynecologist, sexually abused his patients over a period of nearly 30 years. Tyndall’s former patients complained he touched them inappropriately, watched them undress, required them to lie naked without a sheet, took photos of their genitals, commented on their vaginas and breasts, and falsely diagnosed them with serious diseases.
According to a recent Los Angeles Times report, at least 200 former students have joined suits, but this number could grow into the thousands and cost the school hundreds of millions of dollars for its alleged role in this sex assault scandal.
Earlier reports from the Times revealed that patients had lodged complaints about Tyndall for years. These complaints were never properly addressed, and university officials failed to report him to the medical board, instead quietly forcing the doctor into retirement.
The university said they put Tyndall on administrative leave in 2016 and he never treated students again, following a complaint from a staff member at the health clinic. In their complaint, the staff member reported that the doctor had made inappropriate comments to a patient in front of medical assistants.
The paper also reported that the Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the victims’ allegations. In interviews with the Times, Tyndall, now 71, denied any wrongdoing.
One thing notable in the L.A. Times article is that Los Angeles County Superior Court is considered a favorable venue for the plaintiff. The #MeToo movement has greatly improved the success of cases like this one—several lawyers in the article explained that juries are now more aware of the effects and harm of sexual assaults, and victims are also more willing to come forward.
